Eumig & Chinon

Hey guys, hope you had a great holiday, and I apologize for my long absence again.
Nonetheless, I love to kick off the new year with some great music to set the mood, and I love when that music is actually great and I’m not just lying. So, Eumig & Chinon is an act I’ve come to love, now I’m not saying I know that much about him, but as I go on my usual blog scavenge-hunts I’ve always managed to get a remix or original by Eumig & Chinon in the bag with me. And just thought to myself: “Fuck, this shit is epic”, and put it on my DJ playlist and not thought that much more of it.
Now, intrigued by this producer with a track record of putting out amazing tracks one after another, and convincing me that Kashow wasn’t a one-off shot in the dark I feel forced to learn more about him. This guy actually has only good stuff, I cannot emphazise this enough. So, Eumig & Chinon aren’t a duo, contrary to the name, it actually consists of a 26 year old Danish producer by the name of Christian Kastbjerg. Blessed by the French House angels his productions are.. Wait.. I have a image going.. Imagine THIS, then THIS and finally THIS. There you have it, that’s what it sounds like, pure gold for the ears.
And I encourage you to get his EP right over here. And his remix of  BeatauCue is on the kitsuné release as well, here’s the link.
Here’s his facebook, myspace and soundcloud. Go socialize!

In the Spotlight: LCD Soundsystem

In the Spotlight showcases a cross-section of an artist’s cover work. View past installments, then post suggestions for future picks in the comments!

A few weeks ago, the music world and 20,000 lucky fans in Madison Square Garden said a bittersweet goodbye to LCD Soundsystem. James Murphy is probably better known for who has taken on his music than for covers he’s done, with everyone from Franz Ferdinand to the Muppets reimagining LCD songs. However, he’s recorded some excellent covers as well (including this week’s take on Franz’s “Live Alone” for Record Store Day). At first, it’s hard to imagine how covers could live up to LCD’s best original moments: the songs that capture the complexities of lost youth, fading love, or hipster culture with a few deft electronic tweaks. But Murphy successfully brings his signature sound to a surprising number of genres, draping sharp, lush electronics over a diverse assortment of other musicians’ work. Here’s a look at five of his best studio covers, along with a bonus live track.
Murphy made his first foray into covers with Siouxsie and the Banshees‘ “Slowdive,” released as a B-side to the single “Disco Infiltrator.” Murphy stays relatively true to the original, though his arrangement is more low-key than Siouxsie’s post-punk. The biggest change arises when he replaces the original confident vocals with more hesitant ones that suit the chillier track he crafts.

Murphy goes the opposite direction with Joy Division‘s “No Love Lost.” He brightens up the gloom of the 1978 track with a speedier, more aggressive arrangement. LCD’s cover is less calculated than the original, particularly when Murphy compresses the track into a sharp two minutes for live performances, barking out the final lines like he’s at a party more fun than any Joy Division ever attended.

Murphy jumps ahead a few decades with a cover of Detroit house/techno producer Carl Craig’s “Throw” (originally released under Craig’s Paperclip People moniker). The original and the cover both sprawl through several minutes of smooth instrumentals, but Murphy makes drums the focal point of his arrangement. He cuts in during the second half of the track with sparse vocals in an impressive falsetto. “Throw” was a B-side on LCD’s latest album, This Is Happening, and proved a seamless addition to gigs during the album’s tour.

Two of Murphy’s most famous covers made it into LCD’s three-hour farewell set; the original studio versions are featured here. One was Alan Vega’s “Bye Bye Bayou,” originally recorded for Record Store Day in 2009. The cover swaps Vega’s sparse arrangement and growling vocals for a lush disco vibe, complemented with snapping backbeats and smooth, echoing vocals. The other was Harry Nilsson’s‘s “Jump into the Fire,” the “Daft Punk Is Playing at My House” B-side that became a longtime standby at LCD shows. It’s a straightforward, energetic track, largely without the dance touches that Murphy brings to most of his covers, but Nilsson’s repetitive, increasingly adamant vocals on the original explain why it attracted Murphy, mirroring his own style.

Invisible Twin remixes Acid House Kings “Would You Say Stop?”

I was a big fan of Acid House Kings‘ latest album, Music Sounds Better With You. The album’s lead single was “Would You Say Stop?” and now the single is getting its own remix contest. To promote the contest, Acid House Kings just released this remix by Invisible Twin. The group takes the upbeat twee pop track and makes it something a little more sinister. Check it out.

Digitalism – 2 Hearts

Enjoy electronic symphonies for the brain? Look away now, then! Here's some drunk-in-a-field synthetic rock just in time for the festival season ...
Jens Moelle and İsmail Tüfekçi, aka German indie-dance duo Digitalism, don't really do subtle. Part of a scene that emerged out of forgotten dance genres such as electroclash and nu rave, their raison d'etre is simple enough; big dance riffs, big beats, big choruses. Their re-workings of tracks by the likes of the White Stripes, The Futureheads and Klaxons saw them emerge alongside DFA and Soulwax as acts most likely to continue the dance/rock hybrid that Daft Punk helped initiate. With their forthcoming second album, the awkwardly titled I Love You, Dude due out in June (and featuring a co-write by Julian Casablancas), the pair are hoping to get everyone dancing like it's 2006 again. 2 Hearts – a Guardian exclusive – opens with a heavily-treated guitar figure before a very Klaxons-circa-Myths-of-the-Near-Future chant-like chorus kicks in over an arena-sized synth riff. This isn't intricate or complex dance music for the brain, it's energised, drunk-in-a-field synthetic rock for the impending festival season.

Chilled and Ready to Serve [Toro Y Moi]

This is your Daily 2% – Chilled and Ready to Serve. We will try to bring you one “chill” track every day. This is for when you get home and you are trying to unwind. You reach for that glass of wine or that unlit Black & Mild or maybe you reach for something more herbal. This track is for those times. We will try to bring you at least one a day. We are just your milkmen and I’m here to make a delivery. Chill…..
Today’s delivery is brought to you by Toro Y Moi. I remember when he first starting making waves, in the scene, and how my first reaction to seeing/hearing him was “Wtf, huh?”. And then maybe 3 minutes later thinking “Oh my bad, I didn’t know he was a bona fide genius”. I can’t be the only one that judged him a bit too quickly and then was blown away. But anyway, he recently released his second studio album that seems to show that he gets even better with time. The newest album is entitled Underneath the Pine and the track I’m bringing to you today is the final song on the album called “Elise”. Overall, the song is super chill but there are some somewhat “intense” parts that are still mellowed out by Toro’s chillwave sound. This is one of the best tracks to cruise the streets with or to zone out to. Check out the track and chill…..

Roisin Murphy – Mommas Place (Odd Year Remix)

Funny, I just realized I never did post my remix of Roisin Murphy’s track, “Mommas Place”.   So here it is,
BTW, Roisin is currently working on a new album due out soon — can’t wait, yum!

Beyonce – Girls (Who Run The World)

It’s the first taste of Beyoncé‘s latest single, “Girls (Who Run The World).” Check out the full stream above, courtesy of Rap-Up!
According to multiple reports, this is a demo/unfinished version (which seems obvious enough from the DJ call outs, seemingly unfinished bridge and shortened introduction.) The official version will reportedly have a much longer intro.
Though its far too early to shape a concrete opinion on the Major Lazer-sampling single, I’m already digging it from what I’ve heard. A disjointed club banger…giving me some total “Lose My Breath” vibes!
